Mount Vernon, Iowa — Simpson (14-8, 7-6 IIAC) held off a Cornell College (7-13, 3-8 IIAC) second half rally to defeat the Rams 92-78 Feb. 3 in Mount Vernon. The Storm held Cornell to nine first half field (9-of-30) and forced 12 turnover as Simpson took a 49-27 advantage into the break.

Simpson led by as much as 24 with 8:22 remaining, but a 21-4 Cornell run cut the Storm lead to 77-70 with 4:01 to play. 20 seconds later, Chris Handke missed the front end of a 1-n-1 which resulted in a Storm rebound and a Jason Parkinson jumper. Brett Cermak made a steal on the Cornell in-bounds pass and called time out before falling out of bounds. Parkinson made a bucket the next time down for the Storm and was fouled, making the score 82-70.

Matt Lewis was fouled. He made 1-of-2 free throws, but got the offensive rebound of his miss, cutting the Storm lead to 82-73. Ryan Hittenmiller was fouled on the ensuing Simpson possession and made both of his free throw attempts for a 84-73 Storm lead. Simpson got a stop on the defensive end. A set offensive play resulted in David Ferezy going to the free throw line where he made both free throws for a 86-73 Storm advantage. Griffin LaDew made a three for the Rams to again create a 10-point Simpson advantage with 1:38 remaining. Simpson turned the ball over after a Cornell timeout but the Rams could not take advantage and fouled Cermak who rebounded the Rams' miss. He could only make one free throw attempt. Michael Tierney’s layup created a nine-point layup, but Jason Soppe's layup increased the Storm advantage to 11. Simpson got another stop, rebounded the ball, and with Cermak’s three with three seconds remaining, Simpson won by 14.
