Already enjoying some big success in the rebuilding process under second-year head coach Ellen Thompson, the Scots are now 3-5 on the season and 1-4 in the MIAC, and have won back-to-back games for the first time since early in the '01-02 season. Mac didn't participate in the conference standings the last two winters after shutting the program down for a season two years ago, and now gains its first victory over an MIAC opponent since beating St. Olaf in February 2004.
Each team scored 27 first half points and 19 points in the second half, but it was the Scots who out-scored their guests 11-6 in overtime by holding Concordia to a 1-for-10 shooting figure. Mac's defense, in fact, was strong all night, forcing 21 turnovers and allowing CC to shoot just 29% from the field.
Ann Baltzer and Elise Pagel posted double-doubles to lead the way for the Scots. Baltzer led all scorers with 17 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. Pagel finished with 14 points and 14 boards. Trina PaStarr also reached double figures in scoring with a 10-point effort off the bench.
Annie Keeley paced Concordia with 14 points. Reserve Sara Sorbo added 11 points to go along with five steals. Mac’s defense held All-MIAC forward Melanie Hageman to just six points on only five shots.
The Cobbers led for much of the first half but never by more than five points, and the game was tied at the intermission. It took Concordia nearly seven minutes to score in the second half and by that time Macalester had fought to a 35-27 lead. The Cobs tied things up at 35-35 at the 11:28 mark and things were close the rest of the way before the game headed to overtime at 46-46.
Concordia scored the first two points over OT before Macalester answered by scoring eight straight points to claim the victory.
The Scots try to make in three in a row when they host Augsburg on Saturday (Jan. 6) at 3 p.m.
