St. Peter, Minn. — Jake Phillips scored 19 points and added six rebounds and four assists and Zach Johnson added 18 points as Carleton College held host Gustavus Adolphus to 23 second-half points in notching a key 66-63 win over the Gusties.

The win leaves the Knights one game back of third place in the conference standings at the midway point of the MIAC slate. It marked Carleton's fourth straight win over the Gusties, the first time the Knights have beaten Gustavus four straight times since 1920-25. Tommy Drake added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Carleton (6-9, 5-5 MIAC).

Phil Sowden paced Gustavus (8-7, 6-4 MIAC) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Wittwer added 12 points and six rebounds for the Gusties.

The Knights used a 14-0 spurt early in the second half, the first five by Johnson and the last four by Jeremy Sutherland, to turn a one-point deficit into a 13-point margin with less than nine minutes left. The Gusties never got any closer than 10 points as the Knights held the hosts to six second-half field goals.

Early it was all Gusties, as the Knights failed to score for the game's first five minutes and trailed 8-0. Carleton settled down, though, and used a quick 8-2 spurt to get back into the game and trailed 30-28 at the half despite shooting only 39 percent in the second half.

For the game, the Knights shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) compared to 43.2 percent (19-of-44) for the Gusties. The Knights had but six turnovers compared to 12 for Gustavus, which translated into a 12-6 margin on points off turnovers for the visitors. Carleton outrebounded the Gusties, 32-30.

The Knights are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, hosting Augsburg College to start the conference season's second-half schedule.
