Jake Phillips added 12 points but was 4-for-15 from the floor. Outside of Johnson and Phillips the Knights managed only seven field goals from their other six players that saw action for Carleton (7-10, 6-6 MIAC).
Ryan Johnson paced Concordia with 16 points and Luke Linz added 14 points and five rebounds.
Tommy Drake, Carleton's third-leading scorer and top defender, missed the game with an illness as the Knights' three-game winning streak came to an end.
With the exception of Johnson, the Knights couldn't find the basket in the first half, as Johnson was 6-for-14 in the first 20 minutes, but the rest of his team was 3-for-18 and the Knights trailed at the break, 32-22. The Cobber lead grew to 12 points before the Knights used a quick 9-0 spurt, keyed by two Johnson buckets and Phillips's first three of the game, to pull with two at 41-39.
The Knights had their chances down the stretch, including missing the front end of a one-and-one when they trailed by two with 1 minute, 13 seconds left, but the Cobbers made a pair of huge three-pointers in the final five minutes and canned 4-of-4 free throws in the final 10 seconds for the win.
The Knights shot only 33 percent for the game, were outrebounded 40-28 and allowed the Cobbers to make 7-of-15 from three-point range. Carleton only had six turnovers and held a 15-0 spread in points off turnovers, but Carleton's bench was outscored 20-2 in the loss.
The Knights are now a half-game back of fourth place in the MIAC standings and one game up on Augsburg for fifth place. The Knights travel to St. John's University, which suffered its first MIAC loss tonight at St. Mary's. The Johnnies and St. Thomas are tied atop the conference standings at 11-1. The game, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, tips off at 7:30 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn., and can be heard locally on KQCL 95.9 FM/Power 96 and worldwide on Knights Online.
