St. Thomas 75, Hamline 65

Northfield, Minn. — Tommy Drake scored 22 points, canning 10-of-14 from the field, and added 11 rebounds and Zach Johnson added 19 points, eight steals and six rebounds as Carleton College emphatically snapped its three-game losing streak by taking down St. Mary's University, 77-49.

Jake Phillips added 11 points and seven assists for the Knights (4-8, 3-4 MIAC). Carleton shot 57 percent from the floor in building a 42-24 lead and 50 percent for the game. Jeremy Sutherland added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Knights.

Eric Lear and Michael Batterman added eight points each for the Cardinals (3-8, 2-5 MIAC). The Cardinals shot only 35 percent from the field despite going 9-for-21 from three-point range. The Knights held a 36-28 edge on the glass, which translated into a 15-2 spread in second chance points. SMU also committed 19 turnovers, leading to 22 Carleton points.

The Knights took control early, bolding to a 16-9 advantage. The hosts built the lead to 11 and finished the half on an 11-0 spurt, capped by Phillips's three at the horn, to lead by 18 at the break.

The Knights left little doubt as to the outcome, using a 12-0 run after SMU had opened the half with a John Gencius triple, to lead 54-27 seven minutes into the second half.

The Knights now turn their attention to rival St. Olaf College, which they'll face on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. on the Oles' home floor, which is being renamed for former head coach and athletic director Bob Gelle. A Knights' victory would assure Carleton of retaining the Goat Trophy for another season, as the Oles must sweep the Knights to gain possession of the famed trophy.
