Piedmont 82, North Georgia 79

Northfield, Minn. — Jake Phillips scored 21 points and added five rebounds and four steals and Zach Johnson tallied 13 points and four rebounds, but Carleton College shot only 39 percent from the floor in dropping their third consecutive game, 67-63, to Bethel University.

Tim Madson paced the Royals (13-5, 8-5 MIAC) with 17 points and seven rebounds and Steve Strom added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists as Bethel won for the seventh straight time. Charles Meadowcroft added 10 points and four rebounds for the Royals, who earned a season split with Carleton.

Bryan Rosett tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the Knights (7-12, 6-8 MIAC), who have lost all three games this week without third-leading scorer and defensive stalwart Tommy Drake, who is out with an illness.

The Royals built a 13-point lead midway through the second half on the strength of a 15-2 run. Carleton answered with an 11-0 spurt, capped by a mid-range Phillips jumper and Johnson lay-up, but Strom drilled a right-wing three-pointer with less than three minutes left to push the Royal lead back to five and Cory Laugen got loose for a running jumper and the Royals held on for the victory.

The first half played out much the same. The Royals scored 10 straight points to move to an eight-point spread, but Carleton responded with a pair of Phillips long-range baskets and a Jeremy Sutherland beautiful reverse lay-up to close to 35-33 at the break.

Carleton was 24-for-61 from the floor, taking 11 more shots than the Royal, but Bethel was 24-for-50 from the field, including 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from three-point range. The Royals turned the ball over 18 times, compared to Carleton's 11 miscues, but the visitors held a 16-11 spread in points off turnovers.

The Knights are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 31, travelling to the University of St. Thomas for a 5:45 p.m. contest. The game, a men's/women's doubleheader, can be heard locally on KQCL 95.9 FM/Power 96 and worldwide on Knights Online.
