Orange, Calif. — Amber Connor scored 11 points and made one of two free throws with four seconds left to lift the Carleton College women\'s basketball team past host Chapman University (Calif.), 59-58, in the Knights\' season opener.

Sarah Lincoln led Carleton (1-0) with 12 points and eight rebounds and Hannah Oken-Berg added 11 points and five rebounds. The Knights outrebounded the Panthers, 46-28, but committed 27 turnovers.

Nicole Hayman led all scorers with 22 points for Chapman and Lauren Kamiyama added 19 points, but no other player scored more than five points for the Panthers.

Carleton used a 17-4 run early in the first half to lead, 23-10, fueled by four points from Annie Eckhoff and five by Connor. The Panthers whittled the lead down to five on a Kamiyama three-pointer, but the Knights scored six of the half\'s final eight points, including an Eckhoff three-point play, to take a 32-23 lead at the break.

After an Anna Biewen bucket to open the second half, the Panthers embarked on a quick 10-2 spurt to cut Carleton\' lead to three. The Knights moved the lead back out to nine as Lincoln scored four straight points, but Chapman reeled off 11 straight points and led, 50-48, with less than five minutes left on Hayman\'s three-point play.

Carleton, playing its first game compared to Chapman\'s thrid of the season, responded with a Lincoln basket and two Sarah Kunelius free throws. After Megan Mileusnic and Annie Isler each made two free throws, the Knights led 58-54 with a little more than a minute to go.

Chapman, though, got a pair of Jessica Ciske charity tosses and a Hayman bucket following a Carleton turnover to tie the game. Both teams had chances at a go-ahead basket, but it was Connor\'s steal and a subsequent Chapman foul that left the former Rosemount (Minn.) star at the line with four seconds left. She missed the first, but made the second and Chapman was unable to get off a shot in the final seconds.

Despite the huge rebounding edge, the Knights only outscored Chapman 13-10 in second chance points while the Panthers held a 29-6 spread in points off turnovers. The Knights\' defense essentially won them the game, as they held the Panthers to only 32 percent shooting, including 4-for-24 from three-point range.
