The loss snapped Carleton\'s 16-game regular-season winning streak that dated back to last season. The Knights last lost in the regular season on Dec. 29, 2005, to the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
Samuel Wilhoite paced the Vulcans (1-1) with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Martin added 17 points.
Tommy Drake added 10 points for Carleton.
The Knights (0-1) took charge of the first half by using a 15-6 run, capped by a Phillips three-pointer, and eventually led 36-29 at the break. Carleton canned 7-of-13 three-pointers in the first half, paced by Phillips going 4-for-5 from deep in the game\'s first 20 minutes.
Johnson scored to open the second half, but the hosts responded with the next six points to cut Carleton\'s advantage to three. The Knights answered back, pushing their lead back to eight. The Vulcans finally caught the Knights at 49-49 with 11 minutes, 29 seconds left, but again the visitors from the mainland wouldn\'t relinquish the lead, as consecutive baskets by Johnson and Phillips held the Vulcans off for the moment.
A Drake jumper with less than nine minutes left gave Carleton a five-point lead, but the Knights would go 1-for-10 down the stretch. Despite the ice-cold shooting, the Knights had the game tied with less than three minutes to go on a Bryan Rosett bucket, but the hosts made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch and the Knights uncharacteristically missed two front ends of bonus free throws in the final two minutes.
Carleton shot 41 percent from the floor and 38 percent from three-point range, but made only 1-of-8 from behind the arc in the second half. Hawaii-Hilo had a slight 33-30 edge on the boards and turnovers were fairly even, with Carleton turning it over 13 times to the Vulcan\'s 12 miscues.
The Knights are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 25, facing Hawaii Pacific at 11 p.m. (7 p.m. HST). A live video and audio broadcast of the game will be available via the Hawaii Pacific website.
