St. John's 66, Concordia-Moorhead 60

Winona, Minn. — Tommy Drake scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Zach Johnson added 18 points and Jake Phillips tallied eight points and four assists, surpassing the 1,000-point mark in the process, as Carleton shot 61 percent in the second half in racing past host St. Mary's, 66-43.

The Knights (9-13, 8-9 MIAC) held the Cardinals to seven second-half field goals as the visitors erased a 25-19 halftime deficit in winning consecutive games for the first time in three weeks. The win kept the Knights in fifth place, one-half game ahead of St. Olaf, which beat Macalester 61-58 tonight in Northfield.

Phillips surpassed the 1,000-point, 400-assist mark for his career with eight points and four assists, becoming only the fourth player in MIAC history to reach the dual milestone. Only one other Carleton player, Scott Christensen ’03, has posted more than 1,000 points and 400 assists in a career. Only three MIAC players – Christensen and Bethel’s Keith Newman (1989-92) and Dave Blanchard (1977-80) – have accomplished the same feat. He is the 16th Carleton player to join the 1,000-point club.

Brensley Haywood paced the Cardinals (7-14, 6-11 MIAC) with 12 points.

The Knights had but six field goals in the first half, including 1-for-10 from three-point range, but the visitors opened the second half on a 20-5 spurt, including seven straight points to cap the run and lead by nine with less than 13 minutes left. Leading by seven with 7:34 left, the Knights finished the game on a 21-5 run, with Johnson scoring 15 of the 21 during the run.

Carleton made 17-for-28 (60.7 percent) of its shots in the second half, out-rebounded the Cardinals 33-26 and forced 21 SMU turnovers, which led to a 19-4 edge in points off turnovers for the Knights.

Carleton is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, hosting cross-town rival St. Olaf at 1 p.m. at West Gym. The winner of the game takes possession of the infamous Goat Trophy, which the Knights have held for 16 of the last 17 years. The Oles beat the Knights earlier in the season, giving St. Olaf a chance to gain the trophy for the first time since 2002-03. A win would all but assure either team of a spot in the six-team MIAC Playoffs. The game can be heard live on Knights Online and locally on KQCL 95.9 FM/Power 96.
