DeSales vs. St. Joseph's (L.I.) Mar 05
Phillips has now made 14 of his last 17 three-point attempts, going back to the end of a Feb. 10 win over St. Olaf. His five triples moved him into second on Carleton's all-time three-pointers made list with 236, only four from passing Jim Lovrien '98 for the career lead. His 78 three-pointers made this season is five away from matching his own single-season school record, set last season.
Zach Johnson added 16 points, Bryan Rosett chipped in 12 points and Tommy Drake tallied 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for Carleton (11-14, 10-10 MIAC). The win allowed Carleton to finish alone in fifth place in the MIAC, one game ahead of rival St. Olaf College.
Trevor Wittwer paced Gustavus (13-12, 11-9 MIAC) with 18 points and Andrew Doble added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. The Gusties have lost three straight games after their Feb. 7 upset of eventual league champion St. Thomas.
The Gusties raced to a quick 14-4 lead, hitting on five of their first seven shots, and led the entire first half, although the Knights crawled back within one point before settling for a three-point deficit at the break, 33-30.
The visitors scored the first five points out of the locker room, but the Knights used a 13-2 run, to take their first lead of the game four minutes into the second half. The game would be tied five times and the lead changed hands six more times, but after Wittwer's interior basket with 6 minutes, 23 seconds left, the Knights scored 15 of the final 21 points, with Phillips scoring seven of those points.
Gustavus shot 58 percent to Carleton's 53 percent, including 8-for-13 from three-point range for the visitors. The Knights, though, had only eight turnovers to 16 for Gustavus, and the Knights turned that into a 20-13 edge in points off turnovers. The Knights out-rebounded the Gusties, 24-22, and outscored the Gusties from the free-throw line, 14-7.
It marked Carleton's fifth straight win over the Gusties, the first time the Knights have beaten Gustavus five straight times since the Knights opened the series with six straight wins from 1918-25. Carleton swept the regular-season series from Gustavus for the second straight season, also a first for the Knights.
The two teams, though, will meet again in a little more than 48 hours in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals on Monday, where Gustavus owns a 3-0 record in the conference tournament on its home floor against the Knights.
Monday's MIAC Playoff Quarterfinal match-up will be broadcast locally on KQCL 95.9 FM/Power 96 and worldwide on Knights Online.
