The Southern Vermont College women’s basketball team, led by a game-high 20 points from freshman newcomer Markeisha Mullen – one of three players who joined the Mountaineers with the New Year – defeated visiting Newbury College, 60-46, Sunday for the Mountaineers first win of the season.
Southern Vermont’s record climbs to 1-10 record while Newbury falls to 0-9.
“The team has been working real hard and we knew the wins would eventually come – I was proud of all the girls’ efforts and pleased about how they all worked together as a team,” said women’s head coach LaTanya Collins. “In her first game (Jan. 3), Markeisha showed spurts of what she could do for this team, but she was still getting the rust off. I was pleased that she had a good showing tonight; that will really help her confidence and help with her production in later games.”
Mullen, a 5’9 forward from Baltimore, Md., hit on 9-of-12 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the 3-point line in just her second game in a Mountaineers uniform. The two other freshman newcomers to the team also had good scoring nights for Southern Vermont: Nicole Bianco, a 5’4 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., had 10 points and Doneshia Calloway, a 5’7 guard from Danville, Va., added eight.
Newbury was led by senior Jessie Laliberty, Haverhill, Ma., who14 points, including hitting 8-of-14 from the free throw line.
Southern Vermont freshman guard Jaleesa Marshall, Waterbury, Ct., who is the team’s second leading scorer on the season, added 14 points. Sophomore guard Shenika Dow, Raleigh, N.C., who is leading the team is scoring, deferred to the freshmen in the scoring column, but led the team in assists, steals and even added two blocks.
“Newbury was a tough team and they did a really good job of trying to take away of what has been working for us in the past,” Collins said. “They played good defense on Shenika and Jaleesa, but with the depth of this team we still managed to win.”
