With 25 seconds left in regulation, St. Ambrose made a lay-up to tie the game at 84-84. Andre Wagner missed a last second shot from the arc to send the game into the extra frame. Buena Vista converted on 12 of 16 opportunities from the charity stripe in overtime to seal the win.
Buena Vista pulled off the win behind a balanced scoring attack with six Beavers scoring in double figures. Brian Fogleman had 15 points before fouling out of the game with six minutes left in regulation. Kyle Stribe and Wagner each put up 14 points in the win.
The big difference was at the charity stripe. Buena Vista sank 33 free throws while St. Ambrose, which had three players including two starters foul out, made only 13.
The Beavers shot 49.2% for the game and 42.1% from beyond the arc. The Fighting Bees shot 47.7% from the field and connected on only 12.5% of their attempts from three-point range.
Adam Fahrenkrog led St. Ambrose and all players with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Washington and Alex Burkle had 21 points apiece.
It is the 59th time in school history that Buena Vista has reached the century mark. The last time the Beavers scored 100 or more points was when they scored 103 points in a victory over Central College on February 22, 2005.
The win lifts the Beavers to a 6-1 record. St. Ambrose, whose previous five losses on the year all had come to nationally-ranked NAIA teams, falls to 4-6 on the season.
