READING, Pa. — Sophomore forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) scored 25 of his career-high 31 in the second half as Alvernia ran its home court win streak to 13 with an 80-65 win over Wesley College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Shawell nailed seven of eight shots at one point in the second half and helped the Crusaders establish a comfortable 16-point lead with 12:13 to play following a 12-3 run. Shawell started the run with a layup and knocked down two of his four 3s during the four minute stretch. Alvernia (4-2, 2-0 PAC) pushed its second half lead to as many as 22 points and Wesley (1-6, 1-2 PAC) scored the final six points for the 80-65 final.

Wesley took an early two point lead on two occasions, but Alvernia took a lead it never relinquished with a 15-0 run that turned a 6-4 deficit into a 19-6 lead. Shawell and senior Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) led the hosts with four points each during the run.

The Wolverines answered with a quick 12-2 run started by sophomore Rashawn Johnson’s (Selbyville, DE/Sussex Tech) second of four first-half 3s. Wesley freshman Joe Ransom (Sheffield, Eng/Wilbraham Monson) dropped in a tip-in with 7:00 left in the half to cut the gap back to three points, 23-20, but Etzel and Matt King (Phoenixville, PA/St. Pius X) stroked 3s as Alvernia ran off 11 straight points to push the lead to 14 with 2:47 on the clock. Johnson hit another 3 to stop the run, but Shawell’s jumper at 1:35 closed the first-half scoring and Alvernia enjoyed a 36-24 lead at the break.

Johnson opened the second half with a 3 that King answered, and a Shawell bucket preceded seven straight for the guests before Alvernia’s 12-3 run put the game out of reach.

Etzel finished the day with 21 points for the Crusaders, his third 20-plus performance this season. King finished with 14 and Shawell posted a game-high 12 rebounds. Johnson led Wesle with 20 points and Tyrell Brown (Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) finished with 18.

Alvernia will take a week off for finals and return to action next Saturday in a non-conference game at Albright.
