PELLA, Iowa — Guards Brett De Hoogh and Zak Clark scored Central College’s final nine points in the last 1:34 to lift the Dutch to a 65-61 Iowa Conference men’s basketball win over Coe College Saturday.

De Hoogh’s 3-point bucket broke a 56-56 tie and Clark followed with a layup after Coe tied the score again at 59-59. Then De Hoogh and Clark each sank a pair of free throws in the last 33 seconds. Central improved to 8-8 overall and 5-3 in league play while Coe is 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

“Brett wasn’t a great 3-point shooter when he was a freshman but he’s worked really hard at it,” coach Mike Boschee said. “He believes in himself now and there was no bigger 3-pointer than the one that put us up there.”

Clark finished with a game-high 19 points and four assists while center Clint Driftmieer notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

“Clint drew a lot of attention from the defense and had a lot of guys banging on him but he still managed to get a double-double,” Boschee said. “That showed the kind of heart he has.”

Boschee also liked the spark his team got off the bench from guard Miguel Ley who had 10 points. Ley and Clark helped bring the Dutch back from an early 6-point deficit.

“Miguel almost single-handedly put a stop to their run and obviously Zak got hot,” Boschee said. “We’re getting quality production from a lot of guys.”

Another freshman, forward Jordan Leuschen grabbed seven rebounds. Central shot 50 percent from the floor to Coe’s 32.8 percent and outrebounded the Kohawks 40-34.

Central next faces three straight road games, starting with a Friday Iowa Conference women’s-men’s doubleheader at Indianola against Simpson College, with the men’s game starting at 8 p.m. Simpson defeated the Dutch in Pella Jan. 13, 83-65 and carries an 11-6 overall record and a 4-4 conference mark.

“We have a week to regroup and get ready,” Boschee said. “Simpson’s a really good ballclub with three seniors who are as good as anybody in the league. We need to play inspired and play well.”
