The Gophers probably never dreamed, however, that the Eagles would break the Sports & Recreation Center record for most three-point attempts by letting loose 38 times from long distance. Even more problematic, was that Mary Washington connected 16 times from beyond the three-point stripe and pulled away in the second half for an 87-59 victory.
Doing the most damage from three-point range was A.J. Fitzgerald, who accumulated all of his game-high total of 18 points by going 6-for-10 from downtown. Ben Stokes drained four three-pointers in coming off the bench to contribute 13 points to the win. In all, the Eagles (11-3, 5-1 CAC) had six players score in double figures and each one made at least one three-point basket.
Goucher produced the game's leading scorer as Pierre Jones (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) finished with 23 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
James Russo supplied the Gophers (6-9, 3-4 CAC) with 12 points and Cameron Brown snatched a game-high 13 boards.
Goucher led by as many as nine points before the Eagles went ahead to stay on a layup by Justin Baker that made the score 34-33 with 4:43 remaining before halftime. The Gophers trailed by only one point with 1:20 left to play in the first half, but Mary Washington tallied the final six points of the period to claim a 45-38 advantage at the break.
The win not only allowed the Eagles to pull into a tie with Hood for first place in the CAC, but also knotted the all-time series between Goucher and Mary Washington at 17 wins apiece.
