BROWNWOOD, Texas — Despite being outrebounded 53-33 the #2 Howard Payne University Lady Jackets defeated #1 Hope College 53-49 on Saturday at the Brownwood Coliseum to advance to the NCAA III Final Four in Holland, Mich.

HPU jumped ahead scoring ten in the first five minutes while holding Hope to only three. Hope’s Jenny Cowen sank a three with 12:49 left on the clock they close the gap to 12-9. In the last ten minutes of the first half it was a defensive battle with both teams tied up, 20-20 at the half.

Leading Hope College in the first half was Philana Greene and Courtney Knox both with 5 points. Meia Daniels was Howard Payne’s first half leading scorer with 15.

Both teams came out strong in the second half battling back and forth for the lead. With 15:42 remaining HPU led by one 28-27. A tight defense played by each team kept the score deferential of less than three until Hope’s Jordyn Boyles hits a three at 3:58 giving Hope the lead 43-47. The Lady Jackets out scored the Flying Dutch 9-2 in the last three minutes of the game to take the win 53-49.

Hope College was led by Jordyn Boles finishing with 18 points and Philana Greene with 11 points. Also Courtney Knox chipped in with 12 rebounds. The Flying Dutch shot 29.9 percent from the floor and brought down 31 defensive rebounds. Hope finishes the season at 30-1 overall.

Meia Daniels led the Lady Jackets with an amazing 37 points and Stacey Blalock added 9 points with 11 rebounds. Howard Payne shot 34 percent from the floor and 61.1 percent from the charity strip.

Now at 31-0 on the season, Howard Payne advances to the final four in Holland, Michigan next weekend.
