SCRANTON, Pa.
Medaille College overcame a 7-point deficit with 1:47 remaining to pull out a 56-54 victory over The University of Scranton in an NCAA first-round game Friday evening at the Long Center.
Senior guard Marisa Clark (Hilton, N.Y.) provided the late game heroics by scoring six of the Lady Mavericks final eight points to wipe away a 53-46 deficit and send Medaille into Saturday’s second-round game against upstate New York neighbor Rochester, which defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 71-66, in the other first-round game. With the win, the Lady Mavericks, ranked 13th by USA Today/ESPN and 15th by D3hoops.com, improved to 26-2 on the season.
The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for Scranton, which ends its 2008 season with a 21-6 mark. Even after Medaille opened up a two-point lead with 11 seconds left, the Lady Royals had two opportunities to tie the game. Scranton freshman guard Jennifer King (Taylor, Pa.), who provided a big spark off the bench by connecting on three 3-point field goals to finish with nine points, missed two free throws with five second left. Senior forward Kathleen Daly (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) rebounded King’s second missed and was fouled immediately.
She made one of two free throws to make it a one-point game with four seconds left. Scranton then fouled Lady Maverick freshman guard Kacie Mills (Buffalo, N.Y) coming out of a 30-second timeout. After Mills made one of two free throws, Lady Royal freshman guard Megan Kopecki’s (Millington, N.J.) desperation shot from just inside half-court was well short of the mark as the final buzzer sounded.
Kopecki finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for Scranton, which lost its first game of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1995. Senior center Michelle Fabio (Brick, N.J.) contributed 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds and Daly added nine points and six rebounds for the Lady Royials, who shot only 21.9 percent from the field to fall behind 22-17 at intermission. Senior center Sara Bukas (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and senior forward Amanda Baker (Lyons, N.Y.) had 11 points and 16 rebounds for Medaille, which won its seventh straight game.
In a game that featured five ties and five lead changes, it appeared that momentum finally swung in Scranton’s favor when Kopecki scored four points and King hit a 3-pointer during a 10-4 spurt late in the second-half as the Lady Royals extended a 43-42 lead with 3:58 left to 53-46 with 1:47 remaining. Clark then went the length of the court on back-to-back lay-ups and Baker knocked down two free throws with 58 seconds left to cut the gap to one, 53-52. Lady Maverick junior guard Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, N.Y.) came up with a steal and Clark scored again driving to the basket to give Medaille what turned out to be the lead for good, 54-53, with 27 seconds left. After Daly missed a driving lay-up with 12 seconds, Bukas was fouled on the rebound and went down the other end of the court and hit one of two free throws to set up the dramatic finish.
Neither team established any type of flow on the offensive end. For the game, Scranton shot 31.1 percent from the field, but may have missed an opportunity to advance by connecting on just 11 of 21 free throw attempts (52.4 percent). The Lady Mavericks also shot only 36.2 percent from the field (21 of 58) and made just 13 of 23 free throw attempts (52.4 percent).
Saturday’s game between Rochester and Medaille will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at the Long Center. Earlier this year, the Lady Mavericks posted a 67-51 victory over Rochester.
