ROCHESTER, N.Y.
Jon Onyiriuka and Jeff Juron combined for 22 second half points as the University of Rochester overcame Middlebury College, 56-43, in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs at the Louis Alexander Palestra here tonight.
Onyiriuka and Juron scored 14 apiece. Mike Chmielowiec added 13 points for the Yellowjackets who improved to 21-5.
Middlebury did not have a double figure scorer. Tim Edwards scored nine points for the Panthers (19-8). Ben Rudin and Mike Walsh had seven apiece. Walsh grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Andrew Locke had four blocks and four rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.
“I was really proud of how we competed against their bigs,” said Middlebury coach Jeff Brown. “Our biggest concern coming in was their strength and athleticism.”
It was an offensively-challenged first half with Middlebury hitting eight of 31 from the floor (25.8%) and Rochester making seven of 24 (29%). Rochester led, 21-20, at the break.
“I thought we were too emotional at the start,” said Rochester head coach Mike Neer. “I substituted more frequently than usual, because I wanted to get them to calm down and play through some of the excitement.”
Rudin got the Panthers off on the right path to start the second half. His three-point goal gave Middlebury a 23-21 lead 17 seconds into the period. Rochester answered with a 12-0 run over the next 3:27 to take a 33-23 lead. Onyiriuka made two layups and a jumper. Chmielowiec hit a three-pointer, and Juron converted a conventional three-point play.
“At halftime, we realized how terrible we played in the first half,” said Onyiriuka. Rudin jumper provided a spark. “After that, everyone cooled down and relaxed. We felt ‘Let’s get stops and keep working’.”
The lead hovered around eight points until back to back jumpers by Rudin and Ashton Coghlan pulled Middlebury within 41-37 with 6:38 left. Rochester came out of a Middlebury timeout with eight straight points: jumpers by Uche Ndubizu and Juron, a layup by Onyiriuka, and a jumper by Chmielowiec. It was 49-37 with 4:19 remaining. Juron helped seal the win by hitting five of six from the line in the last two minutes.
“In the first half, we missed makeable shots,” Juron said. “We knew we were doing the job on the defensive end. Coach challenged us to do a better job on the boards.”
There were no surprises for the Panthers. “We saw what we expected,” Edwards remarked. “We knew they were a great half-court defensive team.”
“They outplayed us in the second half,” Brown said. The 12-0 run made a big difference. “We had to extend the flow defensively, and I think that too a little steam out of us offensively.”
Rochester will host Penn State-Behrend, an 83-62 winner over Farmingdale State University, for the right to advance to the Sweet 16.
