#4 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Baruch, 73-58, in NCAA Tourney First Round

Junior guard Katy Larson scored 18 points and senior center Liz Hickey added 17 points, 13 rebounds, and blocked four shots to surpass the 500-block plateau for her career in a 73-58 victory over Baruch College on Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles advance to host the College of New Jersey in the second round on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
The Eagles got off to a fast start, but trailed, 8-6, with 15:44 to play in the opening half. But UMW went on a 15-0 run to advance the lead to 21-8 with 11:08 to play. Junior Ashton Mitchell scored seven points in the run, and scored 13 in 13 minutes before leaving the game with an injury. The lead stayed around 10 points until fthe final seconds of the half, when Kaitie Clarkin's three pointer gave UMW a 14-point lead at the half, 41-27.
The second half saw the Bearcats start strong, cutting the deficit to seven at 44-37 with 16:51 to go. With the score 48-41 with 14:30 to play, UMW scored nine straight to recapture a 16 point lead at 57-41 with 11:29 to go. The lead bounced back and forth from 10 to 14 the rest of the way, with the final score coming to 73-58.
Larson ahd 18 points and five rebounds to pace UMW, while Hickey scored 17 with 13 rebounds and four blocks. Mitchell scored 13 in 13 minutes, and Clarkin added 11 off the bench for UMW. Leigh Kampman had eight rebounds and six assists for UMW, now 27-2 overall. Baruch was led by Dominique McClendon's 21 points and eight rebounds, both team highs.
UMW shot 42% from the floor, while the Bearcats shot just 33%. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 51-36, and blocked eight shots as a team.
The Eagles will host The College of New Jersey, a 65-52 winner over Bridgewater College, on Saturday with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16. In the opener, TCNJ was led by Sara Best's 19 points and Hillary Klimowicz's 16 points and eight rebounds in topping Bridgewater.
