Don't let the final score fool you. Wheaton College (IL) defeated Lawrence University 93-83 in overtime in a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament regional semifinal at Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin Friday, but the teams traded clutch shots and plays, back and forth, into overtime. Wheaton prevailed by scoring 22 points in the five minute extra period, while hitting fifteen of sixteen free throw attempts in overtime.
Lawrence led by the slimmest of margins, 34-33 at the half after holding a 30-19 lead at the 6:11 mark. The Vikings bumped the lead back to eight, 49-41, on a three pointer by Ryan Kroeger at 13:43. The Vikings maintained a lead until Wheaton's layup with 9:52 left tied the game. The teams traded clutch plays to tie the game six times in the second half. Andy Hurley put LU up by one, 70-69, by hitting the second of two free throws. Hurley was back at the line at 0:19, and he gave Lawrence a 71-69 lead. Wheaton 's Kent Raymond put the game into OT with a fifteen foot jumper with 0:05 left.
Wheaton junior guard Kent Raymond had ice in his veins in the overtime, scoring thirteen points, including ten from the charity stripe.
Wheaton junior center Andy Wiele led both teams with 28 points, also grabbing a game high 11 rebounds. Raymond added 23 points, including 14-14 from the line, as well as ten boards and a game-high six assists,to his night's work. Sophomore guard Ben Panner contributed 22 points.
Kroeger, a junior guard, led Lawrence with 22 points, including 4-6 from beyond the arc. Three other Vikings scored in double figures, with Hurley, a senior forward scoring 16, junior forward Chris Page 15, and senior guard Ben Rosenblatt 11. Hurley also dished out five assists, and Kroeger led both teams with three steals.
Lawrence shot 50% from the arc, hitting 10-20, while Wheaton was 6-13. The Thunder offset the long range shooting with a ten point bulge at the line, making 27-31 compared to 17-26 by Lawrence. Wheaton also enjoyed a 39-22 rebound margin.
Wheaton, 20-7, will face the winner of Friday's second regional semifinal game, with host UW-Whitewater facing Loras College. Lawrence ends the season with a 22-3 record.
