SCRANTON, Pa -
Helen Baroody scored 15 points, including three three-point goals to lead four players in double figures as the University of Rochester defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 71-66, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Playoffs at the University of Scranton.
Melissa Alwardt scored 14 points, Johanna McNelis had 13 points, and Alex Porter had 12 point and 11 rebounds. Rochester improved to 21-5.
Ashley MeFetridge and Nicky Morey scored 19 points apiece for the Warriors. Stephanie Smith scored 11 points. ECSU finished 24-5.
Rochester surged ahead for good with a 16-0 run over a four-minute span in the first half. Baroody hit two three-pointers in the run and McNelis added one. Rochester held a 26-12 lead with 6:16 left in the half. Baroody’s third three-point basket gave Rochester its biggest lead at 36-20 with 2:23 left. Eastern closed with an 11-1 run to pull within 37-31 on a McFetridge layup but McNelis hit a three with five seconds left for a 40-31 lead at halftime.
Four points from Morey got Eastern within 46-43 four minutes into the second half. Her layup kept it at five, 53-48, with 12:18 to go before Rochetser used a lengthy 11-4 spurt to build it back to 12, 64-52, with 6:42 remaining.
Rochester went cold and Eastern chopped the lead down to three, 64-61, on a layup from Morey with 1:52 left. McNelis made four free throws to get it back to six, but Smith’s three-pointer made it a one-possesion game at 69-66. Alwardt nailed down the win with two free throws at 0:03.
Porter grabbed 11 rebounds and Baroody had eight. Courtney Donovan blocked four shots and made three steals in 11 minutes off the bench.
For Eastern, Bridget Durette scored eight point and grabbed eight boards. Morye had five assists. Rochester shot 40% from the floor, 39% outside the arc, and made 16 of 20 free throws. Eastern hit 38% from the floor, 33% outside the arc, and sank 13 of 16 from the stripe.
Rochester moves into Saturday’s second round at 7 against either Medaille College or Scranton.
