Senior guard Patrick Hasiuk (Enfield, Conn.) scored a game-high 19 points, making four out of six shots from three-point range and all five of his attempts from the foul line, to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 74-55 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the finals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament at Amherst College’s LeFrak Gymnasium this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 21-6 and earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament with its first-ever NESCAC Championship title. Trinity lost in the finals in 2001 and 2002, has qualified for the tournament for the last eight years, and has reached the semifinals seven times. Bowdoin, which defeated Trinity in Hartford in double overtime during the regular season, drops to 21-6 and hopes to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney when they are announced on March 3. Trinity will be making its seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament and its second in a row.
Trinity led, 25-21, at the half after the teams combined to shoot just 34.6 percent from the field and make four three-pointers in 17 tries. Hasiuk was the lone hot shooter in the opening stanza, scoring 11 of his points and sinking three shots from long range in five attempts. Trinity senior tri-captain forward Robert Taylor (Dorchester Center, Mass.) caught fire from at the start of the second half, scoring seven points during a 14-4 run that gave the Bantams a 39-25 lead at the 14-minute mark. Bantam freshman guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.) scored the final three points of the run on a trey from the left corner and drove the length of the floor for a traditional three-point play just a minute later. Hasiuk followed with a rare four-point play on a trey from the right wing and a converted free throw to give the Bantams a 48-32 advantage with 12:15 on the clock, and freshman guard Ian Fels (Miami, Fla.) nailed a three from the same spot as Ford, banked in a runner and made a free throw to convert on yet another old-fashioned three-point play to up the Trinity lead to 20 at 54-34 with 10:10 left in the game. Bowdoin could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way despite 20 combined points by senior captains Jordan Fliegel (Cambridge, Mass.) and Andrew Hippert (Worcester, Mass.) in the second half.
Trinity shot an unfathomable 86.7 percent from the field in the second half (13-15) and made 20 out of 22 shots from the line in the second frame. Taylor made all six of his field goal attempts and finished with 13 points in the game, while junior guard Paul Rowe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 12 points and tied senior center Steve Dunn (Garwood, N.J.) for the team lead in rebounds with six. Bantam senior tri-captain center Russ Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) totaled 11 points, going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, five rebounds, and three blocks.
