CONWAY, Ark.
In the semifinal round of the SCAC Men’s Basketball Tournament at Hendrix College, No. 22 Millsaps needed four free throws from seniors Lorenzo Bailey and Allen Odum in the final seconds to knock off the host Warriors, 73-68, and advance to the championship game against the No. 2 Centre College Colonels Sunday at noon.
Millsaps (24-3) won the opening tip and Bailey set the tone from the opening shot, nailing a 3-pointer from the far right wing for a 3-0 lead that started a 13-3 run for the Majors and forced Hendrix to call the first timeout of the game.
Out of the timeout, the Warriors countered the Millsaps run with a 10-2 spurt of its own to climb back in it at 15-13, using a pair of crisp passes from sophomore guard Janson Hightower that led to easy buckets in the paint.
Back-to-back hustle points for Millsaps from an easy Edrick Montgomery layup and a Russell Booth 3-pointer pushed the lead back out to eight, 30-22, for the Majors with 4:34 left in the half.
After a 26-point, 9-rebound performance in the quarterfinals against Rhodes, Montgomery started out slow from the floor, forcing his first three shots from outside his shooting range before knocking down a pair of free throws for his first points of the game at the 13:06 mark.
Montgomery finished the half with 10 points behind senior teammate Rodney Rogan with 11, closing the half by connecting on 4-of-5 shots and giving the Majors a slight 38-34 halftime lead.
Hendrix (14-12) opened the second half with a lot of intensity, using two of junior Andrew King’s 10 second half points off a layup followed by a Cal Rose bucket and a free throw to take a 1-point lead just minutes into the period.
The Hendrix student body, nearly absent in the first half, came alive in the second period and rallied around the Warriors. The teams traded six leads and were tied on six different occasions in the frame, turning up the defensive pressure on both sides of the floor.
A two-handed block from sophomore Cameron Varnado with the Majors up 44-43 sent the Millsaps fan base on their feet – nearly 100 strong from parents to staff to students.
Millsaps took a slight 59-57 lead at the 5-minute mark, pushing its lead out to as many as seven, 68-61, before Hendrix’s Hightower hit his only bucket of the game at the 3:10 mark to cut the Majors’ lead down to five.
A forced shot from the Warriors with just over a minute to go and a quick foul allowed Millsaps to head to the free throw line where they’ve had their struggles during the year only hitting 68 percent from the charity stripe.
The situation couldn’t have been better for the No. 1 West-seeded Majors, sending their best free throw shooter to the line in Bailey (87.8 percent) to shoot the 1-and-1. Bailey knocked down both and Odum followed with a pair to make the final margin 73-68.
Montgomery led the Majors with his second-straight 20-point night, hitting 10-of-17 shots from the floor for 22 points to go along with nine boards. “I realized the jump shot wasn’t falling so I started taking it to the basket,” Montgomery said. “I started to find my groove and made shots to help us win … we’re cutting down the nets tomorrow.”
Rogan followed with 15 and Bailey added 12 for Millsaps. Cal Rose led the host Warriors with 21 points off five 3s, nearly doubling his season average, while King added 12 and Ryan Wible added 11.
Just 1-5 in its previous five trips to the SCAC Tournament, Millsaps advances to the championship game for the first time in school history where they will meet the Centre College Colonels who are riding a 25-game winning streak. Tipoff is set for noon.
