CHICAGO, Ill.
No. 23 University of Chicago hit 12 three-pointers as the Maroons captured the University Athletic Association (UAA) men’s basketball championship with a 74-66 victory over No. 7 Washington University on Saturday afternoon at the Gerald Ratner Athletic Center.
Chicago, which captured its sixth UAA title in school history, receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Washington U., which dropped to 19-6 overall, 10-4 in UAA play, remains a candidate for an at-large bid. The 59-team NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced Monday, March 3, on www.ncaasports.com at 11 a.m.
The Bears hit six of its first seven shots from the field to jump out to a 13-2 advantage just four minutes into the game. Senior Troy Ruths was active early on scoring six points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Ruths followed with a three-play play, and then baskets by junior Tyler Nading and senior Danny O’Boyle made it 20-8 with 12:09 remaining.
Chicago (18-7, 11-3 UAA) got back into the game with its three-point shooting, as Hainje and Adam Machones drilled triples to cut the Bears advantage to 25-21. Three consecutive three-pointers by the Maroons ignited a 9-2 run knotting the score at 33-33 with 1:40 remaining. Jake Pancratz connected on the fourth-straight from long range giving Chicago its first lead at 36-33 with 45 seconds left.
The Maroons hit 7-of-12 from three-point range in the first half, en route to a 36-35 halftime lead. Ruths led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, while Machones and Hainje added 10 points apiece for Chicago, which shot 50 percent from the field. Washington U. also shot well in the opening half, connecting on 53.8 percent (14-26).
Chicago opened the half on an 11-2 run with three three-pointers as the Maroons built a double-digit lead (47-37) with 17:00 minutes left. The Maroons held a 54-43 advantage when Washington U. answered with an 8-0 to trim the lead to 54-51. After a timeout by Chicago, Nading connected on a pair of free-throws and sophomore Aaron Thompson nailed a three-pointer to knot the score at 56-56 with 7:33 left.
Thompson connected on his fourth three-pointer of the game, to trim the Chicago lead to one (67-66) with 1:17 remaining. On the ensuing play, Nate Hainje drilled a three from the sideline with 45 seconds to extend the lead to four. Thompson missed a runner on the offensive end, and then Chicago made four-straight free-throws to seal the victory. The Bears shot 32.1 percent (9-28) from the field in the second half.
Ruths finished with a game-high 24 points connecting on 12-of-15 free-throws. Thompson added 18 points, while Nading had 12 points and six rebounds. Hainje finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Machones added 18. Pancratz (15 points) and Matt Corning (11 points) also scored in double figures for Chicago. Washington U. outrebounded Chicago, 37-29, and had a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Saturday’s game marked the fifth time since 1995-96–and fourth time in the past eight years–that the Chicago/Washington U. season finale determined the UAA champion. The Maroons won there last six UAA games en route to their second-straight UAA title.
