The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit with 1:39 left, scoring the final nine points of the game, to escape with a 71-69 victory at No. 2 Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon at Auerbach Arena.
Senior Troy Ruths scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as the Bears extended their winning streak to 12 games. Ruths, who also finished with 12 rebounds, passed Charlie Borsheim (1989-93) into sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,450 points.
Trailing 69-62 with 1:34 on the clock, junior Tyler Nading connected on a free-throw and then Ruths followed with a lay-up. After a steal by the Bears, Ruths completed a three-point play to trim the lead to one (69-68) with 29.3 seconds left.
Andre Roberson missed a 15-footer on the ensuing possession, giving the Bears’ one more chance. After a timeout by Washington U. with 29.3 seconds left, Ruths came through once again with a three-point play with 16.6 seconds left to give the Bears a 71-69. Joe Coppens had one last chance for Brandeis, but his three-pointer was off the mark.
Nading also finished in double figures with 16 points, while senior Danny O’Boyle added 14 points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore Ross Kelley added a career-high 12 points and a team-high six assists in 36 minutes played.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Kelley and O’Boyle ignited a 12-4 run as Washington U. jumped out to an early 14-9 lead with 12:52 remaining. Brandeis (12-4, 2-3 UAA) answered with six-straight points of its own to regain the advantage at 16-15.
Washington U. retook the lead at 33-25 with a 10-0 run as O’Boyle drained consecutive shots beyond the three-point arc. Kevin Olson followed O’Boyle’s lead with two triples of his own to cut Washington U.’s halftime advantage to 37-33.
The first half encountered 14 lead changes, as Washington U. shot 58.3 percent (14-24) from the field. Despite committing 10 turnovers in the opening frame, Brandeis held a slim 12-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Nading led WU will 11 points, while Kwame Graves-Fulgham added 11 for the Judges.
Washington U. began the second half 1-of-8 from the field, and committed three turnovers. The Judges answered with a 10-2 run, capped a three-pointer on the wing by Joe Coppens, to build a 43-39 advantage with 16:38 to play.
Washington University improved its all-time record to 32-8 against Brandeis, including winning 30 of the last 31 meetings. Graves-Fulgam finished with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to lead the Judges. Kevin Olson (12), Coppens (11) and Terrell Hollins (10) also scored in double figures.
Washington University (14-2, 5-0 UAA) returns to action on Friday, Feb. 1 at No. 1 University of Rochester. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (ET) at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
