Washington U. 61, New York University 52
Feb 24, 2008

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball won its regular season home finale over New York University, 61-52, at the WU Field House in , on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Troy Ruths celebrated senior day by scoring 31 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, becoming just the second player in Washington U. history to eclipse 1,600 points in a career.

The Bears’ win sets up a showdown with the University of Chicago in the regular season finale on Saturday, March 1, in the Windy City. Both teams are 10-3 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, and will vie for the outright conference title and an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Washington University (19-5, 10-3 UAA) trailed by as many as eight in the first half, and came as close as three points before heading into the intermission with a four-point deficit, 30-26. Following a pair of made free throws from Ruths, making the score 19-16 New York at the 9:36 mark, the Violets went on a 5-0 run, capped off by a three-point play by Omar Meziab to take a 24-16 lead. Washington U. used a 7-2 run of its own to pull within three points, 26-23.

Ruths led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, while Keith Jensen netted eight points to lead New York. The Bears shot just 40.0 percent from the field in the first half and the Violets controlled the paint, outscoring Washington U., 20-12.

Junior Tyler Nading stripped Richie Polan of the ball at midcourt and drove down the court for a fast-break lay-up at the 16:38 mark of the second half to tie the score at 34-34. Sophomore Cameron Smith’s basket 4:48 into the second half put WU ahead, 36-34, the Red and Green’s first lead since 14 seconds into the game.

John Mish tipped in a shot for New York at the 12:11 mark to end a 5:06 scoreless drought for the Violets, and NYU tied the score at 38-38 on its next possession. However, New York (15-9, 6-7 UAA) would not lead or tie the score again. Nading converted a three-point place to give Washington U. its largest lead of the game, 49-43, and the Bears stretched their advantage to eight points, 53-45, on a basket by Ruths.

Washington U. improved to 7-0 in 2007-08 when holding its opponent to fewer than 60 points, and it was the Bears’ 69th-consecutive win when accomplishing the feat. WU turned the ball over a season-low six times in the win, including once in the second half. Nading finished the game with 17 points and nine rebounds. Mish was New York’s high scorer with 12 points.

Washington University honored its three senior players prior to Sunday’s contest – Danny O’Boyle, Ruths and Moss Schermerhorn.
