VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.
Tyler Fantin hit 10-of-16 field goal attempts en route to 24 points, and pulled down 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double and eighth of the season Saturday to help No. 19 Virginia Wesleyan College to an 86-52 victory over the visiting Lynchburg College Hornets, but his most thrilling move of the day took place after all the competition was over.
In front of a large crowd of fans, friends, and family members celebrating "Senior Day" at VWC, Fantin dropped to a knee and proposed to long-time girlfriend Vanessa Havice. Points were scored, just not on the scoreboard.
But, back to the court, Fantin's effort was part of a strong showing by the Marlins, who jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never trailed, opening up a 48-16 lead by halftime. Senior Ton Ton Balenga scored 19 first-half points and finished with 26 overall, to improve his career total to 1,670, moving him into the No. 2 position among VWC's all-time leading scorers. He hit 9-of-13 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Sophomore Stephen Fields emerged as the Marlins' third double-figure scoring, tallying 12 points on a 5-of-6 effort from the field.
The victory improved Virginia Wesleyan's overall record to 20-5, giving the Marlins an unprecedented fifth consecutive 20-win season. It also improved the Marlins' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record to 14-4 and solidified VWC's position as the No. 2 seed in the league's upcoming championship tournament.
VWC shot 50% from the field and helped itself with 19 assists and 12 steals. Floor generals D'Juan Tucker and Terrell Dixon recorded five assists each.
Lynchburg, which closed its season with a 3-22 record overall and a 1-17 mark in the league, was led by Mason Woolridge's 13 points. Evan Fancourt added nine points.
