The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball team fell to No. 6 Brandeis University, 68-66, at the WU Field House in , on Friday night. The loss snapped Washington U.’s school-record 24-game home winning streak.
With the win, Brandeis (19-4, 9-3 UAA) improved to 7-0 since losing 71-69 to Washington U. on Jan. 27 at home. The Bears dropped to 18-5 overall and 9-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), falling into a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Brandeis and the University of Chicago.
Washington U. and Brandeis entered halftime tied at 28-28 after a low scoring first half. There were seven ties and five lead changes in the period, and the Bears’ four point, 20-16 lead, at the 7:50 mark was the largest for either team.
The Judges responded to their four-point deficit by going on a 6-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Joe Coppens hit back-to-back three-point baskets, the second coming at the 6:33 mark, to give Brandeis its two-point lead. Coppens’ threes came during a 3:57 scoreless drought for WU, which was broken when sophomore Aaron Thompson scored with 3:55 remaining.
Brandeis went back up by three points, but Thompson hit his only three-pointer of the half to knot the score for a sixth time. Washington U. shot 40.9 percent from the field in the first half. Thompson, senior Troy Ruths and junior Tyler Nading each netted seven points for the Bears. The Judges shot 44.4 percent and were led by Kevin Olson, who scored seven points.
Washington U. shot 70.0 percent from the field (7-of-10) through the first seven minutes of the second half to take a seven-point lead over the Judges. Sophomore Cameron Smith drilled his first three of the game to put the Red and Green on top, 49-42.
Brandeis scored five quick points to cut the WU lead to 49-47, and the Judges tied the score, 53-53, on a three from Olson. The Judges used a 7-0 scoring run to jump ahead 62-58, before sophomore Ross Kelley, Portland, Ore. (Jesuit) found Nading under the basket for a wide open lay-up with three minutes left to play.
A minute later, Nading hit Ruths with a pass under the basket, which Ruths took up and in to tie the scored at 62. Andre Roberson responded with a three to put Brandeis ahead, 65-62, and made a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining to make the advantage five points.
Kelley scored a quick lay-up for WU on the other end, and the Bears fouled Roberson, who missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Red and Green rushed the ball down the court and Thompson found Ruths under the basket for a lay-up to cut the deficit to one, 67-66, with 7.3 seconds remaining, but failed to score on the final possession.
Four of the Bears’ five starters finished the game in double figures. Kelley led the team with a career-high 17 points, Nading and Ruths scored 13 points, and Thompson chipped in 11. Washington U. shot 60.0 percent (15-of-25) in the second half and finished 51.1 percent from the floor for the game. Coppens led Brandeis with 17 points, shooting 5-of-8 from long range.
Washington University hosts New York University in the final home game of the 2007-08 season on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Noon. The Bears will honor their three senior players prior to Sunday’s contest – Danny O’Boyle, Ruths and Moss Schermerhorn.
