Sophomore Janice Evans had 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as the No. 24 Washington University women’s basketball team posted a 74-56 win over No. 24 Brandeis University on Friday night at the WU Field House. Evans, who recorded her second-career double-double, has now scored in double-figures in five-straight games.
Junior Shanna Lei-Dacanay added 10 points, six assists and six rebounds, as Washington U. won its 22nd-straight home game. The Bears have won 142 of their last 147 games at home.
Washington University (17-6, 9-3 UAA) hit eight of its first 12 shots from the field, jumping ahead 21-16 with 10:50 remaining after a lay-up by freshman Kelsey Robb.
Three-straight three-pointers by Dacanay, junior Halsey Ward and sophomore Zoë Unruh gave the Bears their largest lead of the first half at 36-27.
The Bears continued to connect from beyond the three-point arc as freshman Alex Hoover nailed WU’s seventh three of the half to give the Bears a 47-38 halftime advantage. The 47 points scored in the first half by Washington U. tied a season-high.
Dacanay, who came into the game averaging 6.6 points per game, scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field in the first half. The Bears shot 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field, and hit 7-of-9 from three-point range. WU also had a 12-2 advantage in fast break points. Brandeis dominated inside play outscoring the Bears 22-12 in the paint, led by Lauren Orlando’s 12 points.
Brandeis (17-6, 8-4 UAA) missed its first 10 shots of the second half, as Washington U. stretched its lead to 14 (52-38) on a three-pointer by Ward. A three-pointer by Jaime Capra ended Brandeis’ drought at the 14:09 mark. The Judges continued to trail by double figures as the Bears’ defense forced Brandeis to miss 18 of its first 21 shots. Washington U. limited Brandeis to 19.4 percent (6-31) from the field in the second half.
Washington University improved it all-time record to 37-3 all-time against Brandeis, and remained in a three-way tie with the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings
Hoover finished the game with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. She has scored in double figures for four-straight games. Capra led Brandeis with 14 points, and Orlando finished the game with 13, scoring just one point in the second half.
Washington U. returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24, when it will celebrate senior day at the WU Field House in The Bears will square off against UAA-rival New York University at 2 p.m.
