ROCK ISLAND, Ill.
With all five starters in double figures, the Augustana Vikings clinched at least a share of a third straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin basketball title with an 83-68 win over Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, February 20 in the Carver PE Center. The Vikings led by 10 points (34-24) at halftime and then shot .607 (17-28) from the floor in the second half to salt the game away.
In the first meeting between the two teams, on January 30 in Bloomington, Illinois, Augustana had to come from behind in the final four minutes to squeak out a 65-61 victory. This time there was no late minute worries as head coach Grey Giovanine was able to take all four of his seniors off the floor to hearty applause.
The Vikings trailed 2-0 in the opening minute. An 11-0 run gave Augustana an 11-2 lead with 13:58 left in the first half. Illinois Wesleyan then went on a 19-9 run of its own to take a 21-20 advantage with 6:08 to play. The Vikings then closed out the half with a 13-4 run to take a 34-24 lead into the lockerroom at intermission.
In the second half the lead never changed hands although the Titans did cut the margin to five points on four separate occasions. With 11:32 remaining Sean Johnson hit a jumper to bring Illinois Wesleyan to within 49-44 but Augustana responded. Dain Swetalla scored at 11:09 to make it 51-44 and Matt Pelton nailed a three pointer at 10:46 to bump the margin to 54-44. He hit another three at 9:44 to make it 57-44 and Chandlor Collins scored with 9:09 left to make it 59-44.
The lead then dipped into single digits only once more for the remainder of the game and grew as large as 19 (82-63) with 1:09 to play.
Swetalla led Augustana in scoring with 17 points while Collins dropped in 15 and Pelton added 12. Alex Washington scored 11 and Brett Wessels hit double digits with 10. The five starters shot .581 (25-43) from the floor to lead the way.
Johnson led Illinois Wesleyan in scoring with 17 points while Travis Rosenkranz had 11 and Darius Gant scored 10.
Swetalla and Wessels each grabbed eight rebounds and Augustana won the battle of the boards 41-36. Collins blocked three shots and added six rebounds.
The Vikings, who have now defeated Illinois Wesleyan seven straight times in regular season play dating back to 2004-05, move to 19-5 overall and 10-3 in the CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan drops to 15-9 and 9-4.
