UTICA, Ny -
The Utica College men’s basketball team out rebounded Stevens 38-23 and took advantage of 16 turnovers, which led to 18 points, as the Pioneers upset nationally-ranked No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology 63-59 in Empire 8 Conference action Sunday. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 14-9 overall and 8-6 in conference, while the Ducks dropped to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in the Empire 8. The Pioneers avenged a 60-59 loss at the hands of Stevens on Jan. 13 at Walker Gymnasium. The Pioneers are now 1-1 life-time against the Ducks. Stevens remains in first place in the conference followed by three other teams (Ithaca, St. John Fisher, Nazareth) which all have a record of 10-4 in conference play, good for a second place tie. UC is currently on the outside looking in, with only four teams making the conference tournament; the Pioneers currently sit in fifth place. The first half featured six lead changes and the score was tied on four separate occasions. The Ducks largest lead of the first half, 30-25, came after an 8-0 run over the course of 3:37 late in the half. The Pioneers were able to remain close and cut the lead to 32-30 just before the first intermission. 22 of the Pioneers’ 30 first half points came in the paint, with junior forward James McClendon leading the way for UC with 12 first half points. The Pioneers pulled away in the second half after a 14-4 run over the course of 4:33 mid-way through the half to give UC a 54-44 lead, its largest of the game. The Ducks responded with a 9-0 run of their own, and the Pioneers held on to a one point lead, 54-53, with 4:52 left in the contest. UC extended its lead to five points on a Doug Herring lay-up with 1:47 left in the contest and that proved to be enough to fend off the Ducks. McClendon scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor to pace the Pioneers, while Herring added 15 points and senior guard Dennis Munch added 10 points, six assists, five steals and five rebounds. The Ducks were led by the college’s all-time leading scorer, Waleed Farid, a senior guard who tallied a game-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior forward Tim Williams scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, while junior guard Virgil Gray rounded out the double-digit scorers for Stevens with ten points and four steals. The Pioneers return to action Friday night against visiting St. John Fisher College in conference play at the Clark Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. and you can follow the action live on-line at www.empire8.tv.
