ATLANTA,
The Emory University junior Lora Turner scored a game-high 23 points in leading the Eagles to a 68-66 win over No. 23-ranked Washington University Sunday afternoon. The win boosted Emory’s overall record to 12-10, 5-6 in University Athletic Association play while the Bears slipped to 16-6 overall, 8-3 in the league.
Turner hit eight-of-11 from the floor and converted six from the charity stripe en route to her 18th double-figure scoring performance of the season and fifth of 20 or more points. Junior Erica Kaplan was next high in scoring with nine points, and tied Turner for game-high honors with seven rebounds, while junior Lauren Bugg dished out a season-high tying six assists in the win.
Washington University shot 41.0 percent from the floor (25-of-61) while Emory connected on 40 percent (20-of-50). The Bears enjoyed a healthy 43-22 edge in the rebounding department but was hampered by 22 turnovers that Emory turned into 14 points. The Eagles also made the most of their free throw opportunities, sinking 22-of-27 (81.5%) while the visitors converted 10-of-14.
Emory got out of the blocks slowly and trailed by a 19-10 score with 11:52 left in the first half and still faced an eight-point deficit, 29-21, with 7:03 remaining. However, five points by junior Jenny Kraus and three by Turner helped spark a 16-6 Eagles’ run to close out the stanza, giving them a 37-35 edge at the intermission. Turner totaled 14 first-half points while Kraus would go on to finish the contest with a season-high tying seven points.
Emory built a five-point lead, 48-43, with 11:16 left in the game but a layup by WU’s Alex Hoover capped an 11-0 blitz that put the Bears ahead by a 54-48 count with 8:20 remaining. WU still held a four-point edge with 6:29 on the clock before five straight points by junior Kendall Boyd sandwiched around WU basket cut the deficit to one point with 5:42 remaining. Junior Kate Corkle hit a pair of foul shots to give Emory a 61-60 edge, a lead that it would not surrender the rest of the game. A pair of free throws by Turner snapped a 61-61 tie and the Eagles went ahead by four points with 1:27 remaining following a bucket by Turner that came off a beautiful pass from Bugg. From there, Emory kept WU at arms length, getting key rebounds from sophomore Mary Smith and Corkle down the stretch to help seal the victory.
Janice Evans paced the WU scoring effort with 14 points.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 22) with a game at Carnegie Mellon.
