The good news: Whitewater is still in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The bad news: Whitewater suffered its worst defeat since a 90-49 loss to UW-Stout February 20, 2001, a string of 190 games.
Whitewater jumped in front early, leading 6-0 in the first two minutes of the half. Point scored 12 of the next 14 points, to lead 12-8 at 14:21. The first half ended with Whitewater holding a 30-29 lead.
Point regained the lead, 36-34 at 16:45, and the Warhawks did not score fo the next 6:17, while Point used a 11-0 burst to go up 47-34 with 12:14 left, Dustin Mitchell broke the string with a dunk for the Warawks. However, Point again went on a run, 8-0, making it 55-36 at 9:52, and they rolled on from that point.
Whitewater was led by junior guard Matt Goodwin's 14 points, with junior guard Myles McKay adding 13. Sophomore point guard Kevin Koski dished out five assists. The Pointers had five players score in double figures, junior forward Bryan Bemish scoring 16, and a game high six assists. Other UW-SP double figure scorers were senior guard Steve Hicklin with 15, sophomore forward Scott Hoelzel with 13, with sophomore guard Matt Moses and junior guard adding 10 apiece.
Whitewater's halftime lead was built on 42% shooting from the floor, including 3-7 from beyond the arc. However, the Warhawks struggled in the second half, shooting 25%. The Pointers out-rebounded Whitewater 37-25, and committed 8 turnovers to 17 for the Warhawks.
Whitewater (19-4), Stevens Point (19-4), and UW-Oshkosh (17-6) are tied for the WIAC lead with 11-3 records. Platteville (17-6) is lurking one game back at 10-4. UW-W will conclude the WIAC regular season with a pair of home games in Kachel Gym of Williams Center. The Warhawks will host UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at 7:00, and UW-River Falls will come to Whitewater for a 3:00 tipoff Saturday.
