DECATUR, Ill.
The Big Blue men’s basketball team held Augustana on the ropes until Dana Given’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer hit the rim and bounced away, giving the No. 8 ranked Vikings a 59-56 win in Decatur.
Millikin (9-14, 2-10) trailed 27-20 at the half but exploded out of the gate in the second frame, nearly pulling off the upset. Tunde Ogunleye led the Big Blue with 15 points of 4-of-8 shooting but the night belonged to freshman Darrell Adams. In his first start of the season, Adams knocked down 14 points (6-of-10 FG), added five rebounds and swatted away six Vikings shots in 30 minutes of play.
Augustana’s first seven points of the game came off free throws before Alex Washington’s jumper at 10:01 gave Augustana its first field goal (in eight tries). After that Augustana cruised through the first half before Millikin’s offense turned things up. The Big Blue opened the second half with an 11-2 run and stretched its lead to 38-31 with 14:01 remaining. Millikin held off small runs by the Vikings, still leading by eight (48-40) with 9:07 to play.
It wasn’t until a 3-pointer by Jeff Becker that Augustana swung the momentum in its favor. After the basket, the Vikings trailed 53-50 with 5:12 to play and a basket by Washington, a 3-pointer by Matt Pelton and four free throws by Brett Wessels had Augustana up 59-53 with 36 seconds left. Millikin’s Darrell Adams’ dunk drew a foul and a made free throw cut the lead back to three points with 28 seconds remaining. With 1.6 seconds left on the clock, Millikin in-bounded the ball in front of their bench and Givens’ shot just fell short as time expired.
Augustana (18-5, 9-3) got 23 points from Brett Wessels (5-of-11 FG, 10-of-11 FT) and eight rebounds, both of which were team highs. Jeff Becker added 12 points off the bench. Alex Washington picked up three steals. Joscar Demby’s six rebounds were a team high for Millikin.
Millikin shot 47.6 percent from the field (20-of-42), 35.7 percent from 3-point (5-of-14) and 68.8 percent from the free throw line (11-of-16). Augustana shot 35.6 percent from the field (16-of-45), 53.8 percent from 3-point (7-of-13) and 80 percent from the free throw line (20-of-25).
Millikin hosts Wheaton on Feb. 20 in its final home game of the season.
