Centre 69, DePauw 66
Feb 16, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Tony James' potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark and third-ranked and visiting Centre held on for a 69-66 win over DePauw.

The Tigers dropped to 18-5 overall and 9-3 in the SCAC, while the Colonels improved to 21-1 overall and 12-0 in the SCAC. The loss snapped DePauw's eight-game win streak, while Centre exended its win streak to 21.

The Tigers held a 64-63 lead with just over three minutes remaining after Stephen Schott and James hit back-to-back baskets. Thomas Britt's layup with 3:08 remaining gave Centre a one-point lead and his jumper at 1:19 pushed the margin to 67-64.

The teams exchanged missed field goals and the Tigers called time with 16 seconds remaining. DePauw got the ball in the hands of Mike Moore, but his game-tying three rattled in and out with eight seconds left. DePauw's Brian Oilar snagged the rebound and drew a foul with 4.2 seconds left. He made both free throws to close the gap to 67-64.

DePauw fouled Britt on the inbounds and he sank both free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining. James then went the length of the court but couldn't connect on his running three-point attempt.

Centre's only lead of the first half was at 2-0 as DePauw built as much as a 26-14 lead following an 11-0 run. DePauw still led at the break, 38-36.

The Colonels gained the lead in the second half and extended it to as many as six at 57-51 after an 8-0 run on Matt Nestheide's three-pointer, a layup by Ryan Crowdis and Britt's trey. The lead changed hands four more times before Centre gained it for good with three minutes left.

Schott led four DePauw double-figure scorers with 19 and added a team-high five rebounds, while Moore finished with 18 points and five assists. Tom Callen dropped in a career-high 11 and Oilar also finished with 11.

Britt paced Centre with 22 and hit 8-of-10 from the floor. T.C. Thomason, Danny Noll and Nestheide each added 11 while Netheide dished out a game-high six assists.

DePauw shot 43.4 percent for the game and only 38.5 percent in the second half, while the Colonels connected on 54.3 percent for the game and just over 59 percent in the second half. Centre also held a 26-25 edge on the boards.
