UW-Stevens Point 57, UW-Eau Claire 43

The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team went on a 10-0 run in the second half and led the rest of the way as it defeated No. 18-ranked UW-Eau Claire 57-43 on “Think Pink” night at Berg Gym.
The “Think Pink” night was part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) “Think Pink” week that takes place from February 8-17. The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Pointers surprised the crowd in coming out to pink jerseys.
The Pointers improve to 11-0 at home this season and to an overall record of 18-4. In the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Stevens Point is 9-4, two games back of second place. The Blugolds fall to 18-5 overall this season and to second place in the WIAC with a 12-2 record. The home team has won the last 12 games in the series.
Chelsea Kranz came out and scored the first points of the night, but the Blugolds then scored the next eight points to go up 8-2. Eau Claire held that lead until the last three minutes of the first half. Stevens Point tied the contest up on a few occasions, but could not go out in front. However, down 20-16 with five minutes remaining, the Pointers closed the half on a 9-1 run to lead at the half by a score of 25-21.
Stevens Point shot 35 % in the first half, while the Blugolds shot 29 %. The rest of the first half stats were similar as the Pointers had a 20-19 rebounding edge and both teams had six turnovers apiece. The Pointers had 11 points off of Eau Claire turnovers.
After the Pointers built their lead to eight, the Blugolds went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead at 33-31 with 13:31 remaining. Stevens Point then responded with its own 10-0 run to go back up by eight with 11 minutes left. Haley Houghton had back-to-back three-pointers to spark the run and had eight of the 10 points during that span. From there on out it was all Pointers as they increased their lead to double-figures and went on to win 57-43.
Stevens Point shot 33 % for the game, while the Blugolds were held to 29 %. Eau Claire finished just 2-for-14 on three-point attempts. The Pointers were 12-for-14 from the free throw line in the second half and finished 16-for-19 in the game. Stevens Point came into the game the top free throw shooting team in the conference. The Pointers also had a 46-36 edge on the glass.
Haley Houghton led the Pointers with 11 points. Laura Neuenfeldt was the only other Pointer in double-figures as she had 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Janell Van Gomple had a solid game off the bench with eight points and tied with Jessi Sporle for a team-high eight rebounds. Britta Petersen added nine points off the bench. Michelle Burns led the Blugolds with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Pointers will play their final regular season home game Saturday when they host third-ranked UW-Whitewater on Senior Day. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Berg Gym. It is the first game of a men and women’s doubleheader.
