PLATTEVILLE, WI — One comeback was doable for UW-Platteville, but a second was just a little too much to ask.

Second-ranked UW-Whitewater held off #16 UW-Platteville 70-66 Wednesday in a battle for first place in front of 1,354 fans on Bo Ryan Court.

The Warhawks, 18-3 overall, moved into sole possession of first in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 11-2 mark. The Pioneers, who had their seven-game winning streak stopped with their first home loss, fell to 17-5, 10-3.

The Pioneers overcame a 38-28 halftime deficit, taking their first lead at 41-40 on Josh Langenfeld's layup. UWP went ahead 48-42 on Nick Allen's three-point basket with 10:30 remaining, but the Warhawks answered with a 19-3 run.

Billy Kolinske and Myles McKay hit three-point shots, and Dustin Mitchell's layup with 7:30 left gave the Warhawks a 50-48 advantage. UWW eventually stretched the lead to 61-50 on a Goodwin three-pointer.

UWP did not go down without a fight. Jeff Skemp made two free throws at 53 seconds, and Curt Hanson one of two six seconds later, cutting the lead to 64-61. After a UWW missed free throw, Hanson drove the lane and scored with 25.5 seconds left, cutting the deficit to just one. Goodwin, however, made four straight free throws and then a layup with five seconds left for a 70-63 lead. Langenfeld's three-pointer at the buzzer accounted for the final 70-66 score.

Goodwin led all scorers with 32 points, making 11-18 from the field, including 4-8 three-point attempts, and 6-6 from the line. Kori Vernon added 10 for the Warhawks.

Langenfeld's 20 paced the Pioneers, while Hanson knocked down 17, and Skemp added his 12th career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warhawk win gives the teams a split of their season series. The Pioneers won 79-73 on Jan. 23 in Whitewater.

UWP travels to UW-Superior Saturday for a 3 p.m. start and then closes the regular season with two more home games: Wednesday vs. UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23, vs. UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m.

Both the Warhawks and Pioneers have clinched first-round home games for the WIAC playoffs, which begin Monday, Feb. 25.
