The Maryville University women's basketball team has marked their place in NCAA Division III women's basketball history with their 73rd consecutive regular season conference victory, breaking the former record of 72 games held by Emmanuel College (Mass.) since the 2006 season. The Saints defeated Fontbonne University 86-65 on the road to improve to 18-3 overall and 13-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Maryville came out and shot 50.0 percent (17-of-34) in the first half to take a commanding 55-32 lead heading into halftime. Fontbonne cut the lead to single digits midway through the half, but the Saints were able to extend their margin towards the end of the half.
Junior Allie Wilhelm scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, grabbed five boards and had three blocks. The Saints also shot 7-of-16 (.438) from behind the arc and 14-of-20 (.700) from the charity stripe.
Maryville struggled from the field in the second half, shooting only 24.4 percent (10-of-41) from the field and 30.0 percent (.300) from three-point range. The Griffins finished the half with a two-point advantage, but the Saints first half lead was enough to come away with the 21-point victory.
Wilhelm added eight rebounds to her game-high 19 points. Junior Courtney Bergheger added 16 points, four rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Also scoring in double figures for Maryville were juniors Megan McCabe and Sara Wemlinger with 13 and 10 points respectively. McCabe and junior Kim Douglas also had eight rebounds apiece, while McCabe added four assists and three steals. Wemlinger also chipped in with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Fontbonne was led by Calista Collier and Lauren Crain with 11 points each. Kristin Chamberlain pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, while Michelle Reale added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Saints will look to continue their streak next Wednesday, February 20, when they host another rival in Webster University, at Moloney Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm. Maryville will return to action first on Saturday, February 16, when they host Lincoln Christian College in a 3:00 pm non-conference game.
