Adam Nicholson’s 28 points keyed a Greensboro College comeback that fell short at Ferrum, 81-80, in three overtimes on Tuesday.
Keith Crump led Ferrum (12-10, 6-3 USA South) with 38 points, including all of his team’s 6 in the final period. He was 15-32 from the field and made 4 three-pointers.
Nicholson was 10-20 from the field and dished 8 assists. He played 53 of the game’s 55 minutes. GC dropped to 10-12 and 4-5 in conference.
The Panthers are tied with Methodist for first in the USAS. With the defeat, GC is now 2 games behind the leaders.
The Panthers led 39-24 at halftime. The Pride later trailed 55-44 with 7:43 left in regulation. GC outscored the home team 18-4 over the next 6 minutes. Bruce Zamuel (13 points, 9 rebounds) hit a three-pointer that put The Pride ahead 62-59 with 1:29 remaining.
Ferrum’s Marcus Mayo responded with a trey that tied the score. Zamuel then misfired on a three-pointer and Mayo had a shot blocked by Jason Sharpe as time expired. Sharpe scored 14 points and had 3 blocks for GC.
Greensboro’s Josh Brown made a free throw with 15 seconds on the clock to force a second extra period. Crump made a game-tying trey to force a third OT. GC had shots by Nicholson and Sharpe in the closing seconds of the final period that missed.
Ferrum shot 50-percent (33-66) to 45-percent (30-67) for The Pride. Greensboro won the battle of the boards 39-35.
