Freshman Alex Hoover hit a lay-up as time expired in overtime to give the No. 22 Washington University women’s basketball team a 63-61 victory over No. 7 University of Rochester at the WU Field House in , on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Washington U. forces a tie with Rochester for first-place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings. Both schools are 7-2 in conference play.
After the two teams traded three-pointers to open the extra period, Alex Porter converted a three-point play and Melissa Alwardt connected on 1-of-2 free-throws to give UR a 59-55 lead with 3:18 left. The Bears answered back with lay-ups from freshman Kelsey Robb and sophomore Janice Evans to knot the score at 59-59 with 45 seconds left. Alwardt and Evans traded buckets to make it 61-61, and then a costly turnover by UR inbounding the ball gave Washington U. one last chance with 3.8 seconds left, which Hoover converted.
Washington U. led by as many as 15 points, 29-14, in the first half, but failed to score a point over the final 7:12 of the period, taking a 29-22 advantage into the intermission. A jumper from junior Shanna-Lei Dacanay gave the Red and Green the 15-point advantage, but it was also three-point shooting that aided the Bears, who were 5-of-9 from three through 20 minutes of play.
Rochester (17-3, 7-2 UAA) did not score a point until the 15:06 mark of the first half, but Washington U. also struggled through the first five minutes, and only led 4-2 despite the Yellowjacket scoring drought. WU jumped ahead, 11-4, on a jumper from sophomore Zoë Unruh, but Rochester pulled within three points, 11-8, on a three from Marlena Fisher.
Following Fisher’s basket, Washington University outscored Rochester, 18-6, over a 5:30 span as it built the 29-14 advantage. Unruh led Washington U. with seven first-half points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The Yellowjackets scored 18-straight points to take its first lead of the game at 32-29 with under 16 minutes play in the second half. WU missed 15-consecutive shots from the field during the run, and went without a field goal for 12 minutes.
The Bears rallied back as Evans scored five-consecutive points to regain the lead, 39-34. Leading by one (39-38), the Bears went on a 7-0 run highlighted by a three-point play by Robb to go up eight. The Yellowjackets would not go away as they answered with a 12-4 run to knot the score at 50-50 with 1:14 to play.
Tied at 50-50 with under a minute to go, junior Jill Brandt drained two free-throws to give WU the 52-50 lead. Rochester’s Julie Marriott missed a turnaround jumper on the ensuing possession, and the Bears gathered the rebound with 31.4 seconds left.
Dacanay went to the line with 23.4 seconds on the clock and missed the front end of a one-and-one giving UR another chance. Marriott capitalized on her previous miss scoring a lay-up to sending the game to overtime for the second time in nine days. The Bears shot 25 percent in the second half and managed just six field goals made.
Washington University has now won 141 of its last 146 home games, and dating back to last season the Red and Green have won 21-consecutive home contests. Evans led the Bears with 12 points, and Hoover tallied 10 in the game. Marriott led Rochester with 13 points, and four Yellowjackets scored in double figures.
Washington U. (15-5, 7-2 UAA) returns to action on Friday, Feb. 15, when it travels to Cleveland, Ohio, to take on Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (ET).
