MEDFORD, Mass.
Senior tri-captain Jake Weitzen (New York, NY) and sophomore Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ) both scored 20 points as the Tufts University men’s basketball team got its first NESCAC win of the season, 93-68, against Williams College on Seniors’ Day at Cousens Gym Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos (11-11, 1-6 NESCAC) shot a blistering 61.8 percent for the game, their best percentage in over four years. Tufts never trailed, led by 10 at the half (45-35) and pulled away in the second half. The visiting Ephs dropped to 15-7 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC.
Beyel scored Tufts’ first eight points to help the hosts to an early 10-4 lead. With the help of a three-pointer by sophomore Blake Schultz (Atherton, CA) the Ephs closed to within one point at 10-9 with 16:07 still to play in the first half. The Jumbos ripped off the next seven points, five by Weitzen, to lead 17-9 at 14:48. The Tufts lead was never less than seven points from there.
The Jumbos led by as many as 13 in the first half, 34-21, on a lay-up by senior tri-captain Ryan O’Keefe (Everett, MA) at 5:39. The Ephs worked it down to seven points (42-35) after a three-point play by senior co-captain Chris Shalvoy (Rochester, NY) at 1:22. Jumbo junior Aaron Gallant (Bangor, ME) hit a late three to send Tufts to the locker room up 10. Weitzen and Beyel both had 13 points for Tufts at the half, while sophomore Joe Geoghegan (Cape Elizabeth, ME) scored 11 for Williams.
The Ephs were within single-digits three times early in the second half, including 50-41 after Shalvoy’s lay-up at 17:31. However, three-pointers by Beyel and senior Jeremy Black (Jamesville, NY) spurred an 8-1 Tufts run that put them up 58-42 with 14:57 to play. The Jumbo lead was in double-digits from there. It reached 20 (73-53) points on a Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA) three-pointer at 9:58 and topped out at 27 points (93-66) late in the contest.
Tufts clings to hopes for a NESCAC Tournament berth with the victory. They were 14 for 25 from three-point territory (56 percent), with Beyel netting four of his five long-bomb attempts. The Jumbos had 20 assists on 34 baskets and just 12 turnovers. Black led with nine assists to go with eight points. Pierce doubled with 17 points and 13 rebounds while O’Keefe hit 6 of 10 field goals and scored 16 points. The 25-point margin of victory ranks as one of the largest by which Tufts has defeated Williams.
The Ephs kept it close in the first half by hitting 15 of 29 shots (51.7 percent), but a cold second half had them finish at 44.1 percent (26/59) for the game. They were just 4 for 16 (25 percent) from three-point land. Geohegan’s 13 points led the visitors, Schultz finished with 13 and freshman Troy Whittington (Brooklyn, NY) had 11. The Ephs have lost five in a row overall, four in conference play.
