SEGUIN, Tx.;
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team got two huge shots from Neiman Ford and the Cru held off a pesky Texas Lutheran University team 62-60 in overtime Saturday afternoon in Seguin to claim at least a share of the American Southwest Conference West Division title. The UMHB men improve to 18-3 overall and 15-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The win also clinches at least a share of the ASC West Division title for the Cru with the UMHB men holding a four-game division lead with four games left in the regular season. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-19 overall and 1-15 in the ASC on the season. TLU opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take a 39-28 lead. The Cru battled back to take a 44-43 lead on a Tim Lytle three-pointer with 7:14 remaining in regulation. Both teams would have four point leads later in the half and TLU took a 54-51 lead on a pair of Malcolm Dotson free-throws with 28 seconds left. Ford answered with a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 54 and Brad Howard and Nate Walton both missed potential game-winning shots for TLU in the final five seconds. UMHB would grab a three-point lead when David Ray hit two free-throws with 1:35 left in overtime. TLU tied the game on Brad Howard’s three-pointer with 14 seconds left before Ford drilled what proved to be the game-winner with 2.6 seconds left on the clock. Ryan Burgart stole the TLU inbounds pass but was called for a travel with 1.1 seconds left giving the Bulldogs another chance. Howard fired up a desperation three-pointer from mid-court but could not connect and UMHB held on for the victory. Tim Lytle came off the bench to lead UMHB with 16 points. Burgart added 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Cru. David Ray also had 14 points and Ford finished with 12 points, including the five huge ones scored in crunch time. Nate Walton led TLU with 19 points before fouling out in overtime. Brad Howard added 17 points for the Bulldogs and Michael Hill chipped in 10 points. The Cru out rebounded TLU 43-23 and UMHB shot 45 per cent from the field. The Cru held TLU to 40 per cent shooting from the field to help the UMHB men overcome 25 turnovers in the game. The UMHB men will now continue their road trip with two ASC West Division games next week. The Cru will face Howard Payne University in a 7:30 PM tip-off on Thursday in Brownwood before closing out the week with a 3:00 PM start at Sul Ross State Saturday in Alpine. The UMHB men will then return home to close out the regular season with home games against Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on February 21st and February 23rd.
