Backup guard Emily Nelson scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the final 14:00 to key a comeback as the visiting Gusties (14-7 overall, 13-5 MIAC) held on for a 55-52 win that knocked the host Tommies (15-6, 14-4) out of the conference lead.
Katie Layman had 15 points and seven rebounds for Gustavus, which shot just 36% from the floor but made 14-of-18 foul shots.
Jessica Katch and Carrie Embree each scored 15 points for the Tommies, who had 20 turnovers and made just 6-of-12 free throws. DeJurnett Prioleau had nine points and nine rebounds and Andi Olson added nine points.
St. Thomas rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to build a 38-32 lead with 13:21 to play. Nelson scored nine points in a 13-3 run to put Gustavus ahead to stay. Nelson sank two free throws with :09 to go to push the lead to 54-50.
After Katch's layup with :04 left cut the lead to 54-52, Jess Vadnais was fouled. She made the first but missed the second foul shot. The Tommies'desperation shot to tie from half court bounced off the front of the rim.
