Feb 9, 2008

RALEIGH, NC — Christopher Newport women’s basketball player Cheslie Schweers broke two school records and scored 32 points to lead her squad to a USA South road win at Peace Saturday, 85-58.

Schweers finished with 10 three-pointers, breaking Misty Hart and Dana Edwards’ record of eight each set in 1998. She also drained those 10 three-pointers on 12 attempts, a percentage of .833, also setting a new record. Kim Cameron owned the previous record where she finished 6-of-8 (.750) back in 1989.

The Pacers led early, 6-5, with 17:12 to go but CNU would re-take the lead for good just minutes later. The Captains largest lead of the first half came at the break, when they headed into the locker room with a 48-30 lead.

In the second half, the Captains quickly pushed the lead to 20 points just five minutes in and never looked back. Christopher Newport led by as many as 28 in the second half.

Peace was limited to 21-of-60 (35%) shooting from the floor, 2-of-11 (18%) from behind the arc and 14-of-21 (67%) from the free throw line. Christy Freeman led the Pacers with 15 points. LeAnne Horne added 12 points.

CNU finished 30-of-51 (58%) from the field, the team’s highest percentage in any game this season. The Captains were also 11-of-14 (79%) from long range, the best this season, and 14-of-16 (88%) from the charity stripe.

Schweers scored her 32 points on 10-of-13 shooting. She was also 2-of-2 from the line and dished out seven assists. Colandra Rollins added 24 points and eight rebounds. She now has 972 points and needs just 28 to reach 1,000 for her career.

Peace falls to 5-14 overall and 1-11 in the USA South. Christopher Newport is now 14-4 on the year and 9-2 in conference action. The Captains return to action Sunday when they travel across the town of Raleigh to take on Meredith at 1:30 pm.
