The Lehman College women’s basketball team (15-10 Overall, 11-2 CUNYAC) put an end to Baruch College’s 38 game regular season conference winning streak as they defeated the Bearcats (18-6 Overall, 12-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 60-58 Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
Prior to the contest, the Lehman College athletic department took a few moments to honor three Lehman seniors, including Maria Loor, Tiara Carroll and Kimberly Kelly. Each senior received a commemorative framed jersey for their four years of participation on the team, and Carroll also received a 1,000 point ball recognizing her for become just the ninth player in women’s basketball history at Lehman to reach that plateau.
In the first half both teams went back and forth as the Lightning was able to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. The crowd was into the game from the opening tip, and the intensity of the players and the fans grew as they game progressed. Kelly led the way in the first 20 minutes of action, as she scored 11 points and tallied six rebounds. Junior Monique Sampson also chipped in with eight points. For Baruch, senior forward Dominique McClendon paced her squad in the first stanza with 11 points on 5-11 shooting while also grabbing 5 rebounds. Also chipping in was senior guard Chiresse Paradise with eight points, three steals and three rebounds. Lehman shot 38.9 percent from the field, while Baruch connected on 23.7 percent of their attempts.
In the second half, the Lightning built their lead to 10 before Baruch staged a late rally. Lehman held a 60-53 lead with just over two minutes remaining, but freshman Paulie Tuazon’s four missed free throws gave the Bearcats a chance to tie or win the game, as they trailed by two, 60-58, with 10 seconds remaining. Baruch brought the ball into the front court, but freshman Lorin Clarke’s three pointer fell short, as junior forward Sally Nnamani snatched the rebound as time expired, sending the Bearcats to their first conference loss while the crowd erupted.
Kelly played an excellent all-around game, as she led the Lightning with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Carroll put forth a quality effort, as she added 13 rebounds and six assists, and Loor chipped in with six points, five rebounds and three assists. In addition to the seniors’ contributions, Nnamani finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds and made her presence felt on the defensive side with six blocks. Sampson chipped in with 10 points.
For Baruch in a losing effort, leading the way was McClendon with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Paradise scored 20 points, snatched 9 rebounds and tallied six steals and also senior forward Myleka Garnett chipped in with seven points and 11 rebounds.
