ROCK ISLAND, Ill.
The Carthage College men’s basketball team (11-10, 5-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost its fourth-straight game, all in CCIW play, on Saturday, Feb. 9 with a 76-69 loss to first-place and No. 7 Augustana College (Ill.. 17-4, 8-2 CCIW) at the Carver Physical Education Center in Rock Island, Ill. The loss was not, however, without a measure of drama, as Carthage came all the way back from a 23-point second-half deficit.
Carthage fell behind, 14-5, at 15:35 and 20-8 at 12:58. The Vikings made it a 14-point advantage, 25-11, at 11:20. The Red Men came back with a 10-5 run to close the gap to seven points, 28-21, at 5:38, but Augustana (Ill.) closed out the half on a 15-2 run to make it a 20-point game at halftime, 43-23. The Vikings went up by 23 points, 49-26, at 16:25 before the Red Men came up with an unbelievable comeback. As Augustana (Ill.) managed just one field goal, Carthage went on a 15-3 run to close the gap to 11 points, 52-41, at 10:41. The Red Men continued the attack, cutting the lead to nine points, 55-46, at 9:45 and six points, 57-51, at 8:51. Back-to-back three-pointers by Billy Shemerdiak and Trey Bowens at 7:41 and 7:15 made it a two-point game, 59-57. The Vikings went back up by five, 62-57, before a Bowens trey at 4:01 made it 62-60. Augustana (Ill.) went up, 64-60, at 3:22, and then Sean Fendley delivered a three-pointer from the corner at 2:54 to make it one-point game, 64-63.
Dave Mikolaitis hit the front end of a two-shot free throw at 2:31 to tie the game, 64-64, before Augustana (Ill.) sent a parade of Vikings to free-throw line. Dain Swetalla hit two free throws at 2:11 to put the Vikings up, 66-64, and two more at 1:32 for a 68-64 advantage. Steve Djurickovic connected on a jumper at 1:27 to make it 68-66. Brian Larson hit two free throws with 44 seconds remaining for a 70-66 lead. Chandlor Collins hit two more 37 seconds to make it 72-66. Another three-pointer by Bowens at 27 seconds made it 72-69. Larson hit two more at 19 seconds to put the Vikings up by five, 74-69, and another pair at four seconds for the final, 76-69 margin.
Carthage shot 39 percent (25-64), while Augustana (Ill.) shot 45 percent (18-40), including 64 percent in the first half (14-22) and just 22 percent in the second period (4-18). In a series of odd numerical comparisons, the Vikings out-rebounded the Red Men, 50-19, while turning the ball over 23 times to seven for Carthage. Augustana (Ill.) went to the free-throw line 41 times to 11 for Carthage. Steve Djurickovic led the Red Men with 17 points on seven-of-15 field goals and three-of-four free throws. Trey Bowens had 16 points, while Sean Fendley and Billy Shemerdiak added 12 points each. Augustana’s Brian Larson had 24 points and seven rebounds, Chandlor Collins 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Dain Swetalla added 15 points with nine rebounds.
“The only negative about tonight was that they don’t pay off for moral victories,” said Carthage coach Bosko Djurickovic. “Our second half was how you would hope teams approach the game and play with a passion and an effort that gives teams a chance to win. We are undersized, but we are not under hearted. We left everything on the table, and that’s all I can ask. The effort we got from Dave Mikolaitis and Richard Williams was a real key. All coaches look for great players, but sometimes it’s the little guys who bleed for you pay off more. Forty-one free throws to 11 for us was an incredible number, which means we weren’t getting the ball to right people. The effort was sensational, but the result was disappointing. The question now is can we build on tonight’s second-half effort to win against Elmhurst on Wednesday. We’re 5-5 now, and the math is simple—we need to win three of our last four games to get into the CCIW tournament.”
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis.
