Virginia Wesleyan 63, Randolph-Macon 45
Feb 8, 2008
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.
Taylor Lowe's three-pointer from the right corner as time expired in the first half not only gave Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins the halftime lead over No. 24-ranked Randolph-Macon College on Friday, it also gave the host team momentum for the remainder of the game.
That triple made it a 28-26 lead at the break for the Marlins, who built on it the rest of the way en route to a key 63-45 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
VWC, which takes over the top spot in the ODAC with a 14-3 league mark, and 17-5 record overall, outscored the Jackets 12-4 in the first 9:30 of the second half for a 42-30 lead.
Molly Ariail's play inside helped pull the Jackets within nine points with 9:43 to play, but it was the last time R-MC would land in a single-digit deficit.
Heather Phillips answered for the Marlins, who put together a 10-2 scoring surge to push out to a 52-35 advantage with 5:56 on the clock. Scores by Lindsay Riesbeck, Nicole Childress, and Ariail cut the spread to 11 for R-MC, but it was as close as the Jackets would get to the final buzzer.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Jackets for VWC, which put four Marlins in double-figure scoring. Phillips recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and moved within 22 points of the 1,000-point scoring plateau for her career. Senior floor leader Chelsey Barrett added 12 points for the Marlins, and Tonia Jones and Lowe tallied 10 points each.
Randolph-Macon, which fell to 12-3 in the league and to 17-3 overall, was led by Ariail's 19 points and eight rebounds. Childress, who nailed three triples in the first half, finished with 13 points.
Virginia Wesleyan helped itself by outrebounding the Jackets 41-31 and recording 16 assists, led by Andrea Ushinski with five and Barrett with four. Amanda Hiltunen dished out five assists for the Jackets.
