MEDFORD, Mass.
Junior Reece Freeman (Cambridge, MA) scored 24 points with six rebounds, five assists and four steals as second-ranked UMass Dartmouth improved to 20-0 overall with an 86-74 victory at Tufts University on Wednesday night.
The visiting Corsairs got up big early, led by 14 at the half, and were able to keep a hard-working Jumbo team at bay in the second half. As usual, junior Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA) was the leading scorer with 25 points to go with 10 rebounds for Tufts (10-10). The Jumbos have now lost six of their last seven.
UMass Dartmouth got out to leads of 16-5, 25-9 and 34-16 in the first half. After Tufts was able to whittle the margin down to 11 late in the half, a three-pointer in the final seconds by Freeman sent the Corsairs to the locker room leading 50-36. Senior A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA) led UMD with 14 points at the break, while Freeman had 13. Pierce’s 14 paced Tufts.
An 8-3 run out of the gate in the second half helped the Jumbos reduce the lead to single-digits. A three-point play by senior tri-captain Jake Weitzen (New York, NY) put the score at 53-44 UMass Dartmouth with 17:15 on the clock. The Jumbos were still within nine at 57-48 on a lay-up by Weitzen (11 points, 8 rebounds) at 14:18.
UMass Dartmouth used a 12-4 spurt to open up a 17-point, 69-52 advantage on a three-point play by senior co-captain Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA) at 8:52. He had eight points during the run. However, Tufts had a 9-1 response to that and were back within nine (70-61) after a three-point play by junior Aaron Gallant (Bangor, ME) with 7:08 left in regulation.
The Jumbos were able to get within eight points twice, including 74-66 after a jumper by senior tri-captain Ryan O’Keefe (Everett, MA) at 5:18. UMass Dartmouth scored the next four points and the lead was back in double-figures at 78-66 on free throws by Tavares. That’s where it would stay. A Weitzen jumper made it 78-68 at 2:46, but the Corsairs scored seven of the next nine points to put the game away. Five came at the free throw line.
Tavares finished with 19 points and Holbrook scored 17 as the Corsairs put five in double figures. Nine rebounds by senior Cory Tynes (Springfield, MA) led their effort on the boards. The visitors shot 60.6 percent (20/33) in the first half, including 6 for 10 on threes. They were cold in the second half, but it didn’t hurt them.
Gallant was a key to Tufts’ inspired play in the second half, when he scored 10 of his 13 points. He also corralled five rebounds in the game. O’Keefe finished with 13 points. The Jumbos won the rebounding battle 46-35.
