BRIDGEWATER, Va.
Bridgewater College opened up a double digit lead early in the second and then turned back a strong Virginia Wesleyan rally to upset the 18th-ranked Marlins, 70-60, Wednesday night at Nininger Hall.
The scored was tied at the half, 33-33, but the Eagles gained control with an 8-0 run to take a 51-40 lead with 14:04 left to play.
The Marlins then responded with a 14-2 lead and took the lead when Stephen Fields knocked down a 3-pointer with 7:10 left, giving the visitors a 54-53 advantage.
Bridgewater regained the lead on a layup by Michael Oblitey and Dominic Trawick followed with a 3-point to put the Eagles up four, 58-54. Those buckets were the beginning of a 14-0 run that pushed the Bridgewater lead back to double figures.
A layup by Jay Strotman and a 3-pointer from Andrew Cathlin made the score 63-54 and two free throws by Oblitey gave BC an 11-point lead. Trawick capped the decisive run with an easy layup, giving the Eagles a 67-54 lead with 2:29 left.
Trawick led three Eagles in double figures with 24 points. Oblitey scored 17 and Cathlin added 13. The Eagles hot 51 percent from the floor (24-for-47) and made 9-of-16 3-pointers (56.3 percent).
Tyler Fantin put up monstrous numbers for the Marlins as he poured in 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds. Stephen Fields scored 11 points and Norman Hassell added 10.
The Eagles improved to 11-7 overall and evened their ODAC record at 6-6. The Marlins dropped to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the ODAC.
