MIDDLEBURY, Vt.
The No. 14-ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team proved its mettle Tuesday evening by overcoming a 22-point deficit on the road to defeat Middlebury College, 78-74, in non-conference action. Anthony Williams scored a game-high 29 points, Antwane Miller added 18 and Travis Gorham posted 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to carry Plattsburgh.
The Cardinals remain a perfect 10-0 on the road this season with their 11th consecutive win overall, the longest such streak under coach Tom Curle. Plattsburgh recorded win No. 18 in its 20th game for the second-quickest start in school history; the 1955-56 squad won its first 18 in a row before losing the last game of the season.
Middlebury took a 38-21 halftime lead in large part because Plattsburgh shot only 20.0 percent from the field, missing 20 shots. The Panthers converted 51.9 percent of their field goal attempts. But the Cardinals turned things around in the second half by making 22 of 21 field goal attempts for a sizzling 71.0 clip. Plattsburgh outscored Middlebury 57-36.
Middlebury built its largest lead of the game (45-23) with 17 minutes and 51 seconds remaining on a Ben Rudin jumper. He finished with 12 points, but Aaron Smith had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team.
Khylan Hunt (6 points) made a layup with 2:06 left to give Plattsburgh the lead for the first time, 72-71. After a Smith free throw tied it, Williams hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to ice the victory.
